Circularity brings innovation

RECYCLED and recyclable MATERIALS

2 min read

To achieve circularity, we focus on the impact of materials once their life cycle is over. Our vision is to ensure that all watch components come from the circular economy. This is an ambitious vision that we will be striving to implement over the next few years.

StrapS made out of Wine Residue

In northern Italy, a start-up came up with the brilliant idea to use wine waste for the production of a textile very similar to leather. Tests in our Geneva laboratory showed that such a bracelet is of optimal quality. Note that still about 20% PU need to be added for solidification purposes.

Considering 27 billion litres of wine are produced every year, it should be possible to obtain 3 billion m2 of such a material

annually.

StrapS made out of green waste

In a London laboratory, a young team of entrepreneurs led by Mira Nameth developed a textile made from green waste. What is remarkable is that they succeeded in doing so without addition of chemical binders or plastics. With our close collaboration, they are now refining their treatment so as to offer straps that, at the end of their life cycle, will be industrially compostable. The material, as soft as rubber, has pretty dark plant colours.

Biophilica is thrilled to be working together with ID Genève. We are proud to provide a fully plantbased material that puts sustainability first.

Second life for a movement

The mechanical watch movement is an extraordinary invention from the 17th century that is capable of auto-generating energy thanks to its oscillating mass.

We have purchased stocks of such movements, which we have dismantled, cleaned and reassembled - and, of course, tested - with the utmost care. Our fully refurbished ETA 2824 movements, with performances equalling those of new ones, are ready to equip all our watches.
