Notpla (a play on the term ‘Not Plastic’) is harnessing the power of seaweed to replace single-use plastic, one of the leading causes of environmental pollution across the globe. The UN Environment Programme estimates that only 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycled, while 12% has been incinerated and the remaining 79% has accumulated in landfills, dumps, or the natural environment.

Notpla created the ID Genève watch box with Notpla Rigid, a material sharing many similar properties to conventional plastics, but made from seaweed and plants. This revolutionary material can be moulded into a wide range of products and has been engineered to break down in the natural environment.

Origin of the seaweed: Spain

Origin of moulds and production: Europe

Notpla dissolving in water

After receiving their watch box, clients could also dissolve the packaging into water, and use it as a plant fertiliser.

This natural packaging solution enhances ID Geneve’s circular approach to producing luxury watches. Both companies wish this example could inspire more companies to adopt innovative and sustainable packaging in the future.
